Sleep disorders


There are 5 important categories of sleep disorders defined by the Sleep Disorders Classification Committee of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. They are;

Disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep (insomnias)
Sleep-related breathing disorders (sleep apnea)
Disorders of excessive somnolence (hypersomnias)
Disorders of the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm sleep disorders)
Dysfunctions associated with sleep, sleep stages, or partial arousals (parasomnias)

Sub categories include:

Bruxism: Involuntarily abrasion or clinching of the teeth whilst sleeping.

Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS): inability to wake up and doze off at socially accepted times nevertheless no trouble on sleep sustainment, a disarray of circadian cycles. 

Advanced sleep phase syndrome (ASPS): and Non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome

Hypopnea syndrome: Abnormally light respiring or tedious rate of respiration whilst asleep

Narcolepsy: The discipline of falling asleep spontaneously and unwillingly at inappropriate times.

Night time panic, sleep terror disorder, sudden awaking from sleep on conduct ordered with panic.
Parasomnias: Include a kind of troubled sleep-related results.

Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD): unexpected automatic motion of hand/ legs when asleep 

Rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD): behaving ferocious or melodramatic dreams when in rapid eye movement.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS): An overpowering impulse to make a motion with the legs. RLS patients frequently experience PLMD.

Shift work sleep disorder, (SWSD): a situational circadian rhythm sleep disorder.

Obstructive sleep apnea: blockage of the air passage during sleep having deficiency of adequate deep sleep, fequent snoring. 

Sleep paralysis is defined by short-lived palsy of the body e.g. eating, which may include walking, without the conscious knowledge of the subject, sexual activities.

Insomnia: Having gifficulty falling asleep.

Hypersomnia: This is opposite of insomnia. Someone suffering from this sleeps for longer and it is difficult for them to wake up. They also need to take naps is compelling, but provides no relief.
